When the show isn’t jamming the weird Sakamoto-isms, Moa and Laiha are truly really fun characters with interesting aspects about them.
But Geed does rise above with having really great moments and, when the show steers away after the second half, really great female characters. Geed isn’t a wholly innovative show for Ultra, it very much follows a lot of what Orb did and to a degree also followed the problems the former had on varying degrees. But ultimately, the looming finale kind of starts sidelining it to where they have to quickly rush out concluding setups before we do the big climax. The show does start course correcting itself once we reach the finish line, and Riku starts getting more centric episodes where we delve more into his psyche and his genuine flaws as a character.
When the most interesting episodes really aren’t focused on him, that starts to feel like a problem and showcases the flaw in the show’s direction. Geed’s series is a messy show, with a really standing issue of having Asakura Riku, the main protagonist, somehow be the most underdeveloped character in his own starring show. And this is where Geed suffers, it feels like Sakamoto was let loose onto us and, while this gets toned down after the show’s midseason the show still kinda has a hard time escaping from the grasp of his trademarks.
Geed feels very much like a brainchild of head director Koichi Sakamoto, with all this typical cliche and tropes thrown in to the mix (lots of kicks, very fast pacing, thighs, and otaku-y women). Ultraman Geed is neat show that suffers from being too much like the contemporary shows that aired at the time (Toku was in this really bad period where everything had been trying to pull the Kamen Rider audiences, by basically turning them into Rider shows but with the Ultra coat of paint), and serves as this sort of conclusion to about 8 years worth of content with the Ultraman Zero/Ultraman Belial dynamic.
